James Blaney Welsh was lost aboard the Japanese requisitioned liner Lisbon Maru on 1 October 1942, when that vessel was torpedoed and sunk by the U.S. submarine Grouper 100 miles off Ningpo. He had been taken P.O.W. at Hong Kong in the previous year, while serving in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots. The son of Michael Welsh of Edinburgh, he was 25 years of age and is commemorated on the Sai Wan Memorial, Hong Kong.
