Joseph L. Hanks attested for the Royal Engineers, and served with the 17th Divisional Signal Company during the Great War on the Western Front from 12 July 1915. Advanced Sergeant, for his services during the Great War he was awarded both the Military Medal and an ‘Immediate’ Meritorious Service Medal, and was also Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 1 January 1916).
