A rare ‘Order of the Lion and Sun’ group of three to Major C. Duperier, 80th Regiment, late 26th Regiment, and 4th Light Dragoons
China 1842 (Ensign, 26th Regiment), with replacement ornate straight bar suspension; India General Service 1854-951 clasp, Pegu (Captn., 80th Regt.), these two with matching ornate top bars; Persia, Order of the Lion and Sun, Gold Medal, 32mm., obverse: the lion and sun, exergue: engraved, ‘Augst. 28th 1835’, reverse: band of Persian script,engaved in the centre, ‘Presented by the Shah of Persia to Charles Duperier’, suspended from a 51mm. long engraved gold suspension bar, with gold buckle on frayed ribbon, medals contained in an old and damaged gilt shield-shaped glass fronted frame, some slight edge bruising and pin marks, generally good very fine, last rare (3) £3000-3500
Charles Duperier, while serving in the 4th Light Dragoons, was employed in Persia from 1833 to 1839 organising the army of the Shah, for which services he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Order of the Lion and Sun. He was commissioned Ensign in the 26th (Cameronian) Regiment on 29 December 1840. He served with the regiment in China, being present at Ningpo, Chapoo, Shanghae, Woosung, Chin Kiang Foo and Nankin; being wounded at Chin Kiang Foo. On 26 July 1844 he transferred as a Lieutenant to the 80th Regiment, being advanced to Captain on 7 May 1852. With the regiment he served in the Burmese War of 1852-53, including the operations in Donabew against Nameatoon. Duperier was promoted Major in the 80th Regiment on 1 December 1854. His death is recorded in the 1875 Army List having previously retired on full pay from the 80th.
