John Ronayne was born in London and attested there for the 9th Lancers on 3 May 1843. He was promoted to Corporal in January 1850, to Sergeant in February 1852, to Troop Sergeant Major in March 1859, and was appointed Regimental Sergeant-Major on 10 April 1867. He served in Bengal, East Indies, for a total of 15 years and 6 months, and was discharged at Newbridge on 10 March 1869, aged 44 years and 9 months. His discharge papers confirm all medals and clasps and note that he was ‘wounded before Delhi, 8th June 1857, slightly in right arm’, this being the action at Badli-ke-Serai.
