13th century, bronze seal matrix, pointed oval, 38mm x 22mm, Agnus Dei (lamb of god) standing in profile with a banner behind suspended on a pole surmounted with a cross, s’ thome de siepelai. Fine £160-£200
found at Anstey, Hertfordshire, October 2017 (PAS BH-15C912)
‘Agnus Dei’ was believed to have protective powers from the elements. The leper colony situated within the hospital of St Thomas was founded in 1224 on Royston Road.
