The Hartley Institution was opened by Viscount Palmerston in October 1862. It later evolved into the present-day University of Southampton. St Paul’s School, King Street, Southsea, was founded in 1825 by 100 people taking out subscriptions of £25 each; the school opened on 1 August 1826. It closed in 1850 and the building subsequently became a Baptist chapel.
