John Fortune was born in the Parish of St John’s, Dublin, and originally enlisted into the 33rd Regiment at Chesterfield, Derby, on 25 July 1840, aged 22 years, and transferred to the 22nd Regiment at the end of that year. He served abroad in the East Indies for a total of 12 years and was discharged at his own request free, with pension, after 21 years service on 16 August 1861. His discharge papers state that he was ‘in possession of the medal for the Campaign in the Scinde in 1842-3. Served also the Campaign in the Southern Mahratta Country in 1844-5’. Sold with copy discharge papers.
