William Horatio Happell was born on 15 April 1890 and educated at Tonbridge and the R.M.C. Sandhurst. Serving initially in the Notts. and Derby. Regiment he received his first commission in 1909 and was first posted to India in 1910. During the Great war he served in Mahsud, March 1917 and in Iraq, April 1917-October 1918. Post-war he served in Iraq as D.A.A.G. Returning to India, he served in the Judge Advocate’s Department as D.A.J.A.G., May 1927-May 1929; A.J.A.G., November 1929-February 1936; D.J.A.G., March 1936-August 1938 and thence Judge Advocate General from 1938. Retiring in 1944, he was awarded the C.I.E. the year previously. Latterly living in Dulwich, S.E.21, Brigadier Happell died on 4 February 1971.
