Private Horace Llewellyn Rogers enlisted into the Devonshire Regiment on 21 November 1915. Serving with the Devonshire Regiment he was awarded the Military Medal, ‘For coolness during a duel with a Hostile Machine Gun which he quickly knocked out, causing the enemy to abandon it after several attempts had been made to get it away’. He was discharged on 24 October 1918 possibly due to wounds.
Sold with the booklet Instruction on the Lewis Automatic Machine Gun (repaired), inscribed to the recipient; citation for M.M.; two fragmentary newspaper cuttings - one bearing his photograph as a Military Medal winner; a fragmentary notebook - bearing photographs of recuperating soldiers and various written entries; together with sundry German papers and a 1 Mark banknote.
