John R. Winfrey, the son of William and Annie Winfrey of Groundbirch, British Columbia, was killed in action on 24 April 1945, while serving as a Guardsman in the 22nd Armoured Regiment (Canadian Grenadier Guards - R.A.C.). Aged 23 years, he was buried in the Holten Canadian Cemetery, Holland.
