Provenance: Sotheby, June 1898.

William F. Mayne was appointed Lieutenant in the 59th Foot on 4 September 1808, and served in the Peninsula from September 1808 to January 1809, being present in the Corunna campaign. He was present in the Walcheren campaign in late 1809 and served in the Peninsula again from September 1812 to April 1814, being present at the siege of Cadiz, and the battles of Vittoria, where he was severely wounded, Nivelle, Nive, and Bayonne. He afterwards took part in the Waterloo campaign of 1815, and was promoted to Captain on 2 October 1819.
