Timothy Callaghan was born in Ballincollig, Co. Cork, and enlisted into the 6th Regiment at London on 13 April 1839. He joined the regiment in India the following August and remained with it until volunteering to the 41st Regiment in July 1841. He served with the 41st throughout the first Afghan War, and returned to England in the Wild Irish Girl in April 1843, finally receiving his discharge in March 1849.
