Binfield Wemyss was born in Calcutta on 10 March 1844, the son of Major James Wemyss, 44th N.I. He was first commissioned Ensign in January 1862, and served initially with the 54th N.I., and in 1866 transferred to the 41st N.I. Wemyss saw action with the regiment on the North West Frontier and in the Second Afghan war, on the Khyber Line of Communications. He was promoted Major in January 1882, now serving with the 24th N.I., becoming second-in-command in 1886 and Commanding Officer the following year. Promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in January 1888, he commanded the regiment during the operations of the Hazara Field Force in the Black Mountain Expedition at the end of that year. Wemyss was promoted to Colonel in August 1893 and retired as Major-General in April 1900.
