Served as a Private in the Volunteer Company 1st Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. With copied roll extracts. Then as an Engine Fitter he enlisted into the Royal Navy in September 1903. After attaining the rank of Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class in October 1910, he was commissioned an Acting Artificer Engineer in December 1913. With copied service paper.
