Alfred Hartley served as a Civil Practitioner in the war against the Galeka and other Kaffir tribes during 1878, for which he received the medal with clasp. He subsequently attended the University of Edinburgh where he qualified as a M.B. and C.M. in 1881, and as M.D., Edinburgh, in 1883. He then practised as a Doctor of Medicine at Malton, Yorkshire, and in 1896 contributed an article entitled ‘Anaesthetics’ to the Practitioner. Doctor Hartley died at Malton on 16 January 1907.
