William Gardiner Elder was born in Erith, Kent. He served in the O.T.C. at Emanuel School, Christ’s Hospital and London University and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd/20th Battalion London Regiment on 3 February 1915. Advanced to Temporary Lieutenant in July 1915 and confirmed in that rank in June 1916, he served as an Acting Captain. He served in France, 1915-16, Salonika, 1916, and Palestine, 1917. Elder was Gas Officer to the 60th Division in France during the latter part of 1916. Having contracted a lung disease in Palestine, he returned to England in October 1917. He died at the 3rd London General Hospital on 10 February 1918, aged 28 years. He was buried in Eltham Churchyard. He was the son of Thomas and S. D. Elder of 36 Greenholm Road, Eltham, London. Sold with copied research. Medals and plaque in wooden glass-fronted frame - this not suitable for posting.
