R.H.S. Case No. 23,356: ‘Thomas Roxburgh, 131 E. Division, Metropolitan Police, saved Simon Crossland, aged 23, at 2.20 a.m. on 1st September 1886, from the River Thames, near Cleopatra’s Needle. It appears that the man jumped into the river with intention of suicide. It was high water and the current carried him rapidly out. The Constable went in after him and succeeded in getting him to the side, when he became violent and dragged the Constable under in his endeavour to escape. Another Policeman came and assisted them out.’ Sold with career details.
