Edward Dumphy, who was born in Salford, Manchester, was killed in action at Fromelles on 9 May 1915, while serving in the 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, Belgium; the awards of Private Ernest Stevenson, another native of Salford, whose regimental number was Z-769, are also included in the collection (see Lot 600).
