William Arthur Gill Jackson, who was born in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, was killed in action on the Somme on 1 July 1916 while serving in the 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Launching its attack from positions south of Serre, the Battalion was met by ‘a hail of rifle and machine-gun fire’, losing 14 officers and 154 other ranks killed.
