Herbert Edwards, who was born in West Ham, Essex, but resident at Plaistow on his enlistment, first entered the French theatre of war in late July 1915, and was killed in action in the Battle of Ancre on 14 November 1916, while serving in the 13th Battalion, Rifle Brigade. Aged 22 years, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme.
