‘Silver Medal and Certificate to Peter Thorpe, Assistant Steward T.S.S. Vandyck, for gallantly diving into the sea off Madeira and rescuing a shipmate who was in grave danger of drowning, on the 9th February 1937. While the crew were being exercised at boat drill off Madeira a boat fall became unhooked, throwing a steward into the sea. He was stunned by his fall and in grave danger of drowning, when Thorpe dived in, fully clothed, swam to him and supported him till a boat picked them up.’ (98th Annual Report, year ending 1.7.1937, page 53 / 54)
