Thomas Wilkinson was born in the Parish of Guisley, near Leeds, Yorkshire, in 1799, and enlisted into the 47th Foot at Bradford on 25 February 1814, a wool comber by trade. According to his discharge papers, he ‘in 1815 joined the 47th Regiment in the East Indies. In 1817/18 was with the Army under Sir William Keir Grant. 1819 was at the taking of Ras-El-Kymah. 1824, 25 & 26 served through the Burmese War. 1829 Volunteered to the 31st Regiment’. He was by this time a Sergeant, having been promoted in July of the previous year, when he joined the 31st at Cawnpore in July 1829. He was reduced to Private in February 1833 and invalided in November 1837. Proceeding to Calcutta, he embarked for England and arrived at Gravesend on 18 July 1838, having been at sea nearly 6 months. He was finally discharged in 12 September 1838, being of impaired constitution and worn out. Sold with copied discharge papers and other research.
