Captain Matthew Thomas was educated at St Martyrs Shool, Wigan Grammar School and King’s College London. He was shot by a sniper on 30 December 1915 and is buried at Le Touret Military Cemetery, France. His obituary published in The Times states: ‘He fell while warning his men to take cover from a dangerous sniper, to whom he himself became a victim.’
