The eldest son of Aurangzeb, Mu'azzam was governor of Kabul at the time of his father's death, and Azam, taking advantage of his absence declared himself Emperor. He was killed and his army defeated by the forces of Mu'azzam on the plains near Agra the following year. Mu'azzam subsequently assumed the throne with the title of Shah Alam Bahadur. All the coins of Azam are rare. Poole only records two silver coins in the British Museum of this emphemeral figure in Mughal history, one of Ahmadabad and the other of Burhanpur
