Sir Thomas Bazley, Bt (1797-1885), one of the 24 Royal Commissioners at the 1851 Great Exhibition. Bazley was born at Gilnow and educated at Bolton Grammar School before becoming a cotton merchant in Bolton from 1818 to 1826, and thereafter in Manchester until his retirement in 1862. Successively director, vice-president, then president of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce from 1845 to 1859, he served as MP for Manchester from 1858 to 1880, following which he retired to live at Lytham St Annes
