George Godfrey Giffard was born on 20 September 1892, in Wootton, Lincolnshire, the son of Rev. W. W. G. Giffard and Margaret Elizabeth Giffard. Before the war he had joined the 3rd Volunteer Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. On 28 December 1914 he joined the Inns of Court O.T.C. as Private 2475. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 20th (5th City) Battalion Manchester Regiment on 7 April 1915. He entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 9 November 1915 and was promoted to Lieutenant in July 1916. In November 1916, based near Bethune, he contracted trench fever and was invalided home where he was diagnosed with valvular disease of the heart and trench fever. Posted to the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion whilst at home. On 29 May 1915 he was transferred to the King’s African Rifles and served in Nyasaland, May 1918-April 1919. On 24 June 1919 he was gazetted out of the service. Post war he worked for many years as a Government Official in Africa. With a quantity of copied research.
