M.I.D. London Gazette 6 January 1919.

William Henry Cox was born on 22 December 1892 in Bradford, Manchester, the son of Frederick William and Mary Hanna Cox. He was educated at Hulme Grammar School, Manchester and before the war was employed as a Yarn Salesman. He enlisted into the 20th (5th City) Battalion Manchester Regiment on 16 November 1914. He entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 9 November 1915 and applied for a commission in June 1916. He was wounded in action during the battle of the Somme and was invalided to England. As part of the commission process he trained as a Cadet in the 18th Officer Cadet Battalion at Prior Park, Bath. On 26 April 1917 he was appointed a Temporary 2nd Lieutenant in the 21st (6th City) Battalion Manchester Regiment. The battalion, as part of the 7th Division, went to Italy in November 1917, taking part in the battle of Asiago in June 1918. The battalion returned to France in September 1918. Captain Cox was mentioned in despatches for his services in Italy. He relinquished his commission on 9 November 1921. Post-war he became an active member of the 21st Battalion Old Comrades Association and in 1939 was its Vice-President. With copied research.
