George Pennell first went to France as a Sergeant in the 2nd Battalion, Welsh Regiment on 20 September 1914, but subsequently transferred to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and thence the Labour Corps. It was in 69th Company of the latter corps that he was awarded the M.S.M. ‘in recognition of valuable services rendered with the Armies in France and Flanders’ (London Gazette 18 January 1919, refers). He was awarded his Special Reserve L.S. & G.C. in July 1920.
