Killed in action 24.4.1918, Fauchy Switch. Buried Fauchy Chapel British Cemetery near Arras. Commissioned from 9/H.L.I. to 9/A. & S.H. He was soon attached to 11/A. & S.H. however, as the 9th bn. was disbanded due to heavy casualties. Sold with extract from the War Diary, ‘11.10 p.m. the O.C. “C” Co. again visited his line and met Lieut. Stewart whose platoon was responsible for Q gunpits. This officer reported Q gunpits lost. The enemy had worked round the flanks of the gunpits and had bombed posts killing the N.C.O. in charge, Sgt. Fitzgerald. Remainder of garrison withdrew. 11.20 p.m. O.C. left outpost Co. (Capt. Hood) and there ordered a counter attack. Lieut. Stewart took No. 10 platoon and carried out the orders given him. Owing to the quantity of wire however, put up in front of Fauchy Switch, there was only one gap through which the counter attack could go. This was at Railway which runs towards Q gunpits. The enemy were machine gunning this heavily and Lieut. Stewart was killed.
