Thomas Hammer was born in the Parish of St Meevin, Cornwall, and originally enlisted into the Royal Army of Reserve on 13 August 1803, aged 20, a miner by trade. After nearly two years service with the Reserve, he transferred to the 28th Foot on 6 August 1805. He was taken prisoner at Corruna in 1809, but was released after six weeks in captivity, and was promoted to Corporal in about March 1809. He went on to fight at Talavera, Busaco and Albuhera, many years later claiming the M.G.S. medal with those clasps. He was discharged at Harlan Barracks on 21 July 1816, in consequence of ‘Gun Shot Wound in shoulder joint received in action with the enemy at Waterloo, 18 June 1815.’

Sold with copied discharge papers and an extract from
The Cheltenham Chronicle, circa 1914-18, which gives the names of the men of the 28th who were taken prisoner at Corruna in 1808-09.
