Albert Edwin Trayfoot was born in St. George’s, London on 17 November 1873. Formerly employed as a Messenger/Musician, he enlisted into the Royal Marines at London on 1 April 1889. Ranked as a Bugler, he served aboard the Trafalgar, April 1890-June 1893; then the Satellite, January-December 1894, during which time he saw active service in the expedition up the Gambia River, February-March 1894. After serving on the Champion, December 1894-June 1895 and with the Royal Marine Artillery, June 1895-January 1897, his next seagoing appointment was on the Monarch, January 1897-November 1910. During this time he saw active service in the Boer War, serving in South Africa, 21 October 1899-12 October 1900, with the Royal Marine Artillery section in Captain Bancroft’s Brigade. For his services he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 13 March 1901) and awarded the Queen’s medal with seven clasps - one of 39 with seven clasps; one of 29 with the above clasps from his ship. He re-engaged in 1903 and in 1912 was appointed a Colour Sergeant in the R.M.A. He was demobilized in April 1919. In 1946 he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and died in 1951.
