Ernest Alfred Archer was born in Wandsworth, London on 9 March 1880. A Messenger by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in January 1896 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in November 1896. Posted to the 1st class cruiser Powerful in June 1897, he was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in March 1898. Serving with the Naval Brigade and involved in the defence of Ladysmith, Archer died of wounds at the Intombi Camp Military Hospital, Ladysmith on 13 December 1899. He was buried in the military cemetery nearby. One of 275 medals to the ship with the single clasp ‘Defence of Ladysmith’. Sold with copied service paper and other research.
