Ewart Gladstone Smith was born in Mason, Michigan, U.S.A. in December 1892. He was the son of the Reverend Thomas Napoleon Smith, who resided at 59 Poppleton Road, Leytonstone, Essex. Smith served during the Great War with the 7th Battalion (1st British Columbia), Canadian Infantry on the Western Front. Lance Corporal Smith was killed in action at Courcellete, 27 September 1916, and is buried in Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, France.
