Samuel Christian entered the 31st Regiment as Ensign on 5 April 1846; Lieutenant, 11 September 1849; Captain, 15 June 1855. He served the campaign of 1860 in North China including the fall of the Taku Forts (Medal and Clasp). He also served against the Taeping rebels in the vicinity of Shanghai in 1862.
