James Archibald Claridge attested for the Royal Field Artillery and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 19 August 1914. Mentioned in Despatches, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery on 22 March 1917, and in the 1939 Register is recorded as a Captain and Adjutant in the Reserve of Officers.
