A Great War ‘Western Front’ ‘Spring Offensive’ M.M. group of four awarded to Private A. E. Davies, South Wales Borderers
Military Medal, G.V.R. (5-14186 Cpl. A. E. Davies. 5/S. Wales Bord:); 1914-15 Star (14186 Pte. A. E. Davies. S. Wales Bord:); British War and Victory Medals (14186 Pte. A. E. Davies. S. Wales Bord.), sold with an attractive silver trophy with hallmarks for 1911, (xx g) engraved ‘Presented by residents of Port Talbot To Sgt. A. E. Davies, South Wales Borderers, for gallant conduct at Fremicourt, (near Bapume) on 24/3/18 when. whilst being pushed back by large German forces, Sgt. Davies, who was in charge of a platoon of 100 men, held back the Germans until the wounded could be taken back. He went into the village with 100 men & only 30 returned, 70 being killed & wounded. On falling back into Bapume, found the Germans behind them, but by skilfull manoeuvring, got through the German force in single file. Sgt. Davies was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery’, slight edge dig to third, very fine (5) £600-£800

Albert Edward Davies, from Port Talbot, attested into the South Wales Borderers for service during the Great War and served on the Western Front with the 5th Battalion from 5 July 1915. He was discharged ‘Class Z’ on 12 March 1919.
