Frank George Bower was born in Brixton in 1891 and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Middlesex Regiment on 24 November 1915. He served during the Great War on the Western Front from 20 March 1917 and was advanced Lieutenant in the 17th (Service) Battalion, Middlesex Regiment; a ‘Pals’ Battalion, the 17th was affectionately known as the ‘Football Battalion’ on account of the core group of professional footballers which formed its heart. He was awarded the Military Cross whilst serving with the Middlesex Regiment, attached V/5 Heavy Trench Mortar Battery.
