Thomas William Tanner was born in Lewisham, London, on 27 January 1901 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 26 September 1917, serving during the latter stages of the Great War in H.M.S. Minotaur. Promoted Able Seaman on 12 July 1919, he transferred to the Submarine Service on 2 April 1924, and was discharged, time expire,d on 26 January 1931, joining the Royal Fleet Reserve the following day. Recalled for War service on 31 August 1939, he was posted to H.M. Submarine Cachalot on 15 March 1940, and was captured and taken Prisoner of War when she was rammed and sunk by the Italian torpedo boat Generale Achille Papa in the Mediterranean on 30 July 1941; of her crew all personnel except for a Maltese steward were picked up by the Italians. Repatriated following the cessation of hostilities, he was released, Class ‘A’, on 17 September 1945.
