Victorian silver-gilt Armorial cloak badge of Admiral Sir George Broke-Middleton, C.B.
A finely made silver-gilt Armorial cloak brooch of Admiral Sir George Broke-Middleton, C.B. (1812-87), 69mm x 65mm, formed as a garter with the motto ‘Saevumque Tridentum Servamus’ around three crests, for Middleton and Broke, and the Naval Crest of Honour with pendant badge of the Order of the Bath, brooch pin fitting to reverse, extremely fine £120-£160
Admiral Sir George Broke-Middleton was the last surviving son of Sir Philip Bowes Vere Broke, R.N., whose ship, Shannon, defeated and capture the American Chesapeake off Boston on 1 June 1813. The brooch bears the Naval Crest of Honour awarded to Philip Broke when he was made a Baronet for this action. Sor George Broke took his mother’s name (Middleton) adding it to his own. He died in 1887, the last surviving heir of Broke of the “Shannon”.
