The Battle of Eylau, on 7 and 8 February 1807, was a bloody and inconclusive battle between the Grande Armée and Russian troops under the command of General Levin August von Bennigsen near the town of Preussisch Eylau in East Prussia (present-day Bagrationovsk). After a contest lasting over 30 hours and finishing in the middle of the night with Russian troops withdrawing, some 15,000 men lay dead on the battlefield and Napoléon’s advance eastwards was temporarily halted
