The Battle of Friedland, which took place near present-day Pravdinsk on 14 June 1807, was a strategic necessity after the Battle of Eylau earlier in the year had failed to yield a decisive verdict for either the French or the Russians. This time Napoléon secured a victory that routed much of the Russian army, which retreated in chaos and led to Alexander I entering peace negotiations
