Allouard, Henri-Émile (French, 1844-1929), b. Paris
FRANCE/ARGENTINA/CHILE, Inauguration du Monument au Général José de San Martin, Boulogne, 1909, a silver plaque by H.-E. Allouard, allegorical robed female figures clasp hands in front of a bust of San Martin on a plinth, rev. wreath of oak and palm, legend at right, edge impressed 950/1000 argent and with two foundry marks, 60 x 45mm, 80.64g (cf. iNumis MBS 16, 1668). Good very fine and toned, rare £80-£100

José Francisco de San Martín y Matorras (1778-1850), Argentinian general and the primary leader of the southern and central parts of South America's successful struggle for independence from the Spanish Empire in the early 19th century. After the liberation of Peru he moved to Europe in 1824, living successively in Brussels, London and Paris, before moving to Boulogne in 1848. An equestrian statue of him was erected in Boulogne and inaugurated on 24 October 1909, at a ceremony attended by several units from the Argentine military
