In the wake of the Battle of Borodino, fought to an inconclusive conclusion some 70 miles west of Moscow between Russian and French troops on 7 September 1812, the Russian army withdrew from Moscow, leaving Napoléon and his 100,000 troops to take the city a week later, only to discover it largely deserted and set ablaze by its military governor, Count Fyodor Rostopchin (1763-1826)
