In the wake of the Battle of Borodino, the Russian army withdrew from Moscow, leaving Napoléon and his 100,000 troops to take the city on 14 September 1812, only to discover it largely deserted and set ablaze by its military governor, Count Fyodor Rostopchin (1763-1826)
