Alfonso John Best was born in Hampstead, London, around 1894, and attested for the 4th South African Infantry at Potchefstroom on 25 August 1915. Disembarked at Rouen on 22 July 1916, he was admitted to hospital on 19 November 1916 suffering from problems with his hands. He was later gassed in March 1918, before being killed in action during the fighting to regain control of Meteren village on 23 July 1918. He is buried at Meteren Military Cemetery, France.

Osborne William Heard was born in East London, Cape Province, around 1886, and attested for the 4th South African Infantry at Potchefstroom in September 1915. Disembarked at Marseilles on 20 April 1916, he was killed on the Western Front during the Battle of Passchendaele on 21 October 1917. He is buried at New Irish Farm Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.
