Cyril Godfrey Hill was born in Dulwich, London, and attested for the Royal Horse Guards on 8 September 1916, being mobilised on 21 April 1917. Transferring to the Guards Machine Gun Regiment, he served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 17 May 1918, and was discharged on 29 March 1919.
