Joseph William James was born in Chaddesden, Derby, and attested for the Grenadier Guards at Ilkeston, Derbyshire. He served with them during the Great War on the Western Front, before transferring to the 4th Company, Machine Gun Guards, and then to the 4th Battalion, Guards Machine Gun Regiment, and was killed in action on 27 September 1918. He is buried in Hermies Hill British Cemetery, France.
