The SS Champlain, named after the French explorer Samuel de Champlain (1574-1635), founder of Quebec, was built at Saint-Nazaire and launched in June 1931. The vessel had a short service life, from her maiden voyage in June 1932 until June 1940 when, returning from New York, the vessel struck a mine near the Île de Rhé
