The SS Ville d’Alger, built at Saint-Nazaire and launched in 1935, was commissioned especially for the cross-Mediterranean run from Marseille to Algiers, a journey routinely completed in under 20 hours. Requisitioned by the army in 1940 and employed in the evacuation of Dunkirk, the vessel subsequently fell into German hands in 1943 and was scuttled in August 1944. Rebuilt in 1945-7, it then resumed service to Algiers before being sold by the company in 1966; the vessel was broken up in 1969
