John McCabe was born in Bootle, Lancashire, and lived at Southend-on-Sea prior to the outbreak of hostilities. Attesting in London for the 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment, he disembarked at Gallipoli on 20 July 1915 and was present when the Regiment emerged from the trenches at Cape Helles on 6 August 1915 and was heavily repulsed; he was killed in action that same day and is buried at Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery, near the village of Krithia, Turkey.
